WEEKEND RACE REPORT 27TH JUL 09

TIME TRIALS:

Saturday saw Dave Johnson over at the Echelon 10TT.  Despite there being strong winds, he still placed 9th in a time of 21.45.

Sunday, Dave was out again at the Echelon 25 this time with a partner in crime Chris Starling! He placed another 9th in 56.28 with Chris coming a close 10th in 56.54.

Also on Sunday was our Hughendon Hilly! Ten riders turned up to brave the hills and the breezy conditions. Kevin Holloway was the overall winner and has claimed the trophy with a combined time of 1-49-30. He just beat Geoff Powell by 7 seconds who took 2nd place with 1-49-37. Joe Holloway was 3rd with a time of 1-57-19.

Sunday seemed to be the day for time trialling! Tom Rodda rode for the RAF CC in the Elmet CRC 12 hour TT. He clocked up 254.7 miles and placed 8th overall.

Over at the Chippenham & District 25 mile time trial a team of Wycombe riders competed in dry but very windy conditions.  The event was held on the U46/B on the A419 on the Cirencester - Swindon road. Another ladies club record went to Chrissy Radon who took 30
seconds from her own 25-mile time lowering the Club record to a very fast 56.23. Chrissy was a clear winner in the ladies field and was placed 19th in the field of 120 men.  Wycombe’s Adam Topham was 5th with a time 54.38.  There were good times from other
Wycombe riders with Greg Lewis clocking 59.41, Richard Davies 1.00.06 and Anna Holder 1.8.04.  The event winner was Jeff Jones from the host club  (Chippenham & District) in 51.04.

SPORTIVES

Ossie Assem, rode the Etape last week (mon 20th July).  Here is his own report:

This was a very tough mountainous 171kms route from Montelimar to Mont
Ventoux.

The first 149kms was punctuated with 5 climbs to ‘break riders in’,
before the uphill finish to Mont Ventoux, a brute of a 22km climb.

Officially the Mont Ventoux climb has a 7.6pct average, but with the last
6km at 6pct average and the first 5km at 4pct, that means that the
middle section is roughly 10km of 11pct average!

Add in 35 degree temperatures (taken in the shade) beating down on
riders in the largely shade less middle forested section, the
airlessness of the section, coupled with the relentlessness of the
climbing (there are no flat hairpins)…this paints a picture that
explains why pros over the years have feared the Ventoux like no other
mountain!

I rode this is in 7 hours 5 mins, with my split for Mont Ventoux 1 hr 49
mins.

All in all it was a fantastic day!!
