HIGH WYCOMBE CYCLING CLUB REPORT 15.09.08
Clive Nicholls and Kevin Holloway powered their way to victory in the High Wycombe Cycling Club’s 2 man team time trial 25 mile championship on Sunday. The pair won the race with a winning time of 55.57 to clinch the Hewgate Trophy. The race was held in conjunction with the West London Combine Association time trial which was held on a new variation of the A413 Amersham to Wendover course. Their nearest rivals were also a Wycombe pairing – Chris Starling and Geoff Powell who also recorded a rapid time of 56.52. Neither having clocked that sort of time before in solo competition.
There were also good performances recorded by Duncan Smith and Chris Greig 58.00. Dave Johnson and Richard Davies 58.07. Junior Squad riders Andrew Colsell and Joe Holloway produced an excellent 1.02.04. Veterns John Day and Ray Tyrrell 1.7.28. and Alasdair MacVarish and John Francis 1.9.46. Unfortunately father and son duo Adam and Chris Poole punctured and did not finish.
There were personal best performances in the solo event with Tracy Jaquest knocking 2 minutes of her previous best time to come home in 1.7.49. This was Tracys sixteenth personal best of the season, and junior rider James Ralfs recorded 1.16.49.
Our Wycombe riders did well at Andover the previous afternoon where more personal best times were achieved. After the wet and windy weather of late Saturday’s conditions were warm sunny with very little wind, Anna Holder took 20 seconds of her 10 mile time to clock a very fast time of 24.41. Chris Starling sped round in 21.23 for a personal best by 17 seconds. Cliff Grant 22.40. which was almost a minute faster than his previous best time. and Greg Lewis recoded 22.18. The following morning there should have been a 25 mile time trial covering the same road but this was cancelled due to fog.
Gareth Batson who was competing in the 4th category race at Hillingdon sprinted to his first road victory when he crossed the line first at the Hillingdon circuit race held on Saturday at the purpose built circuit at Hayes.
There was also another win for Wycombe Triathlete Phil Crouch who won the Super Veteran category competing in the Sevenoaks Autumn Triathlon held on Sunday. After a 400m swim, 25km bike ride and 8km cross country run Phil’s time of 1.35.36. was almost 4 minutes faster than the second placed competitor. There were over 200 competitors overall and the Wycombe rider was placed 28th overall.
Brother and sister act Alex (22) and Rose (18) Osborne who competed in their very first road circuit events on Sunday. They travelled to Warwick to race in the novice events held around the town centre. They both did extremely well in coping with the technical circuit. Rose was one of only four ladies taking part in the field of 44 riders in the novice section. Alex crossed the line in 9th place overall . These were very encouraging results from both of them which augers well for next season.
Travelling to northern France Richard Wise competed in the Ronde Picardie 135 kilometres sportive. Just missing out on a silver medal time Richard clocked 5hrs 28mins. He now is planning to compete in the 5 rounds of the Grand Trophee Championships in 2009.
