Kevin holloway and Nick calkin (below) took place in the www.trailbreak.co.uk navigator race at Princes Risborough, today.
The 3.5 hour MTB orienteering used a new format where each competitor had to complete 8 checkpoints in a designated order before qualifying to complete the rest of the course.
With local knowledge a great help, Kevin and Nick managed to clear most of the checkpoints, despite early rain making the chalky bridleways fairly tricky, to be placed 1st and 2nd overall. Nick finished on time with 540 points in 1st place and Kevin 2nd, just 10 points behind on 530.

Nick calkin ventured up to Staffordshire this Sunday for another round of the www.midlandtrailquests.co.uk Autumn Series.

As you can imagine the weather was fairly atrocious to begin with, strong winds and driving rain. However, things brightened up towards the end of the event.

The 3 hour MTB orienteering event took place in difficult to navigate trails in the northern part of Cannock Chase and slightly easier bridleways to the North.

Nick chose a clockwise route and managed to score 309 with a 1 point time penalty which put nick 2nd place overall l point away from last season’s champion Ian Cartwright on 316. However, nick found a 10 point error in his score which he appealed and if the organizer agrees nick should end up 1st with 319 points

There’s one round left of the series on the 15th of November which if nicks placed reasonably high in he Should be in with a chance of winning the series overall

Club run – sunday 1st Nov

Club riders

Paul Morrissey-Neil Wragg-Andrew Mullis- Tony Penal- Adam Britain and Karla Boddy Braved the 27mph winds and torrential rain on this Sundays clubs training ride. 35 miles were managed in the terrible conditions.

Only one slight crash involving Paul Morrissey and a slippy road surface ( nothing hurt apart from pride) occurred and overall some good training was had in fierce head and cross winds . All riders finished in good condition and enjoyed the wonders of costa coffee after the ride finished .

Wednesday night circuit/ core training west wycombe village hall.

The usual circuit training is underway developing core stability and keeping riders in good shape during the winter off season. 25 + members turned out Wednesday night for the training session which was fun , tough and varied.

The wed training nights have been further enhanced by Dr Gordon Wright with the introduction of a new training and assessment tool ( watt bike). HWCC new watt bike is being used to test riders power outputs and burst fitness.

This tool will be of great use to coaches at the club and enable an increased understanding of power output and physical ability. More HWCC riders will be tested as the off season continues however please try to let Gordon know in advance so that the correct time can be allocated.

Rider – Nick Calkin

This weekend High Wycombe CCs consistent MTB Rider Nick Calkin took part in the Midland Trail quests MTB series in the North Cotswold’s.

The 3 hour MTB orienteering race started in Upper Brailes, Oxon and took in some of the Beautiful but tough classic Cotswold’s bridleways. After a couple of mishaps early on in the evebt due to wrongly places checkpoints Nick managed to score 355points after coming in 10 minutes late. This result was good enough for a magnificent 1st place overall with last season’s winner Ian Cartwright coming 2nd with 315.

Gorrick Autumn MTB classic

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 12OCT09

TIME TRIALS:

This weekend Richie Davies and Dave Johnson made the long trip to Swansea for the penultimate Rudy Project. Very welsh weather made it utterly horrible but Rich placed second and Dave was the fastest vet on standard. Next weeks final round will be exciting as it is looking that Rich could get Silver overall and Dave a Bronze.

Sunday, Hillingdon CC organised a 25mile TT on the H25/2 course. This starts on the A404 near the Handy Cross roundabout through to the Sonning roundabout on the A4, before returning to Marlow by the same route. We had three of our Wycombe riders in this event the fastest being Geoff Powell who, inspite of being held up in traffic on the return leg on the A4 and slowing for an accident near the Bisham roundabout on the A404, recorded a time of 56.22. High Wycombe’s Pete Lawrence recorded 57:52, and women’s rider Anna Holder 01:07:25. Second claim rider Steve Golla recorded the second fastest time of the day with 51:39, with the fastest time being set by Steve Dennis of East Grinstead CC of 50:11.

Also on Sunday HWCC held their annual Uphill/Downhill Championship on Britwell Hill near Watlington. Despite the wind and cold and also slight drizzle, four club records were broken.

Matt Steven’s broke the senior men’s record and Kevin Holloway knocked seconds of off of his own vet’s record. Chrissy Radon took the ladies record and was 3rd fastest. in the Club Championship, while Sarah Slade took the lady veterans record. Fayle Day was even timed (roughly) up the hill on her horse Tom for a bit of fun.

DOWN HILL CHAMPIONSHIP

This was a family affair with Joe and Kevin Holloway easily taking first and second spots by a big margin. Some 25 members took part and the top three placing were:

Joe Holloway 1st
Kevin Holloway 2nd
Matt Steven 3rd

SPORTIVES:

Alex Osborne completed the Wilier’s New Forest 100 Sportive 100 mile ‘Epic’ in a pretty decent time of 5h 58m to achieve Gold standard award. He’s now at Southampton University studying for an MSc in Civil Engineering, but seems to be doing more cycling than studying, having joined both the road and mountain bike clubs.

Slightly later than planned is a brief rundown on the La Lapebie Sportive in Luchon.

Back in September, a few of us HWCC riders packed up the bikes and club kit and took the flight to Toulouse. Our destination was Luchon in the Pyrenees. We were their for six days in total and spent the first three days doing recons of the route and riding some of the cols…just for fun!

The event was on the Sunday and was three different events during the day, a one col, a four col and a mammoth five col, only for the hardened, purely insane riders i.e. Paul Mace!

Myself and Stuart Smith opted for the four col event. Standing at the start line on a particularly cold Sunday morning amongst hundreds of riders, I couldn’t feel my fingers and the nerves were starting to get to me. The gun went off and the event started. Stuart Smith was off like a fox chasing a rabbit and that was the last I saw of him until the end. I can honestly say the first two cols for me were actually really enjoyable and the views and countryside were amazing. By the time I got to the feed stop I was really starting to feel the pain.

Dropping down into Spain the temperature was hitting the 30’s, heat, tiredness and lactic filled legs were getting to me. Still, I carried on and the only way to get home was up the final climb. Half way up I was wondering what an earth had possessed me to do this, the enjoyment of earlier was quickly fading and I was wishing I had just ridden the baby one col event. Still with some encouragement and support from some French riders and lots of ‘vive la femme’ from spectators I managed to find my legs again (just).

The descents for me were particularly testing as you all well know I am a horrendously bad descender, but I faced my fears, battled my way over the last climb, and dropped back down the many hairpins into Luchon.

With over 2500 metres of climbing, 65 miles over four cols the sense of achievement I felt in finishing was immense. I can honestly say this was the toughest challenge of my life to date but I am very pleased to have done it.

Paul Mace who rode the main event produced a sterling ride claiming gold. Stuart Smith climbed like a mountain goat and did an awesome ride finishing in the male category with 4.13 securing himself silver. I was slow as a snail in 6.18 getting bronze but hey at least I finished and the bears didn’t get me!

CYCLOCROSS:

On Sunday, Chris Miles took part in the second round of the Central Cyclocross league at Hemel Hempstead flying the flag for us in HWCC colours. This was his first cyclocross race and he was pleased with the result, placing 12th in the senior category. The course really played to his strengths as it was a mixture of parkland and wooded single-track. It was a bit like a mini MTB race combined with a bit of time-trialling for the open bits. Being cyclocross of course it rained for half the race which made all the off camber corners all the more fun.

WEEKEND RACE REPORTS 28 SEP 09

TIME TRIAL:

At the weekend, Wycombe’s Adam Topham rode in the Team Swift 25TT near Derby on the A25/11. Adam did a good ride with a time of 52:27 but isn’t sure where he placed. Matthew Bottrill won the event with a 48:59!

On Saturday out in Worcester on a rolling, Dave Johnson rode a 10 mile TT
course on the A38. He recorded a time of 22.05 placed 6th overall and was 2nd vet
on age standard +5.42.

Great Missenden on Sunday saw riders from HWCC and the Westerley compete in an Interclub 25 mile TT competition. Unfortunately I don’t have any actual results apart from that we won with Steve Golla our second claim member being the fastest rider with Dave Johnson hot on his heels in second place. Stewart King also did a PB on his road bike with 1.02.59.

SPORTIVE:

On Sunday, Andrew Mullis and Laurie Philpot rode the 150km Essex Road Club’s Autumn Leaves Sportive. This was Laurie’s first sportive. Although there were no medals on offer, Laurie set himself a time of 5 hours 30 in which to complete the hilly course and finished in precisely that time. Andrew finished in 5:14.

MTB:

On Sunday, Nick Calkin and Rick Fetherston took part in the Forest of Dean MTB enduro. The event was organised by the Royal Dean Forest CC and consisted of a tough 40 mile route through the forest. With technical climbs and descents, coupled together with miles of single-track this course tested each rider’s ability. Both of our guys were riding in the Expert Category which was the first group off, together with the Masters Category. The uphill start suited Rick and he managed to keep with the lead bunch for two of the four laps before easing off the pace a touch and dropping back a little. Nick had to fight hard to keep with a fast group, which slowly thinned out as riders dropped off. The final lap saw Nick riding on his own. They both finished in very respectable times with Rick in 10th place in 3:15 and Nick not far behind finishing just 27 minutes later placing 26th overall.

TRACK:

Monday night saw two of our boys back at Palmer Park track flying the HWCC flag! Stewart King and Kevin Holloway both raced in the Hare and Hound, Points race, Unknown distance, 500 metre sprint and 20km. Kevin Holloway placed a fantastic 3rd in the 20k gaining some well deserved points.

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 21ST SEPTEMBER 09

TIME TRIALS:

Chrissy Radon produced yet another stunning time trial performance on Sunday when she returned a time of 1.54.12 in the Severn RC 50 mile time trial slicing a massive 6 minutes and 05 seconds from her own club record set back in June. This is one of the fastest 50 mile time trials recorded by a woman in the UK this year.

Chrissy was the fastest lady by many minutes on the U46 course west of Swindon, but far more remarkably is the fact that she finished in 10th place overall in the field of 90 riders which included some top men. She is now waiting to see if she has gone into the lead in the Women’s National Two distance Best British Table which covers 25 and 50 mile time trial times. Adam Topham is currently lying in 6th place in the Men’s list,

Elsewhere, in the 6th round of the Rudy Project national circuit series held at Nasby Northampton Richard Davies was placed 3rd in the Disability category with a time of 53.26 behind winner and Olympic medallist Simon Richardson. Dave Johnson finished in 6th place as a veteran on actual time and was 6th fastest on age target with a time of 48.27

In the West London Combine 10 mile TT held on the Great Missenden – Wendover course Geoff Powell was the fastest overall with 22.52. Chris Starling came home in 5th with 24.09, Peter Lawrence 9th 24.19, Phil Crouch 26.19. Ken Powell 28.11 and Rosie Osborne 28.28.

ROAD RACE:

On Sunday, both James Norris and Gareth Batson took a trip to Birmingham to compete in the Solihull CC Road Race. This was a 60 mile 2/3/4 Cat race on a very fast course, taking in some main A-roads.
With the weather on their side over 80 riders lined up at the start. There was a couple of early attacks which didn’t amount to anything and unfortunately after only 2 laps, Gareth had to pull out of the race.

James continued to fly the HWCC flag without his partner in crime and 25 miles into the race attacked with a Raleigh Team rider to catch a break of three.

The five of them started to work together and managed to stay away for a good 20 minutes but the long straight roads held no hiding place for them and they were soon swallowed back into the chasing peleton.

It wasn’t long before another break formed including a rider from Cycling Bargains Team, managing to stay away till 500 metres to the finish where they were caught on the line.

With an average speed of over 25 mph the race came to a close with a bunch sprint seeing James placing a very credible 23rd!

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 14th SEPTEMBER 09

TIME TRIALS:

On Saturday both Gareth Batson and Adam Topham braved the windy conditions to ride the Weyhill weekend on the P613 course at Andover. The cross head out and cross tail back didn’t slow either of them down too much, both producing outstanding PB’s. Gareth came in with a 21.43 whilst Adam, although hoping to break 20 did an awesome time of 20.05. The event was won by Alan Cook in 19.36.

On Sunday Adam rode the same course this time it was a 25TT. If it wasn’t for an 8 minute late start and then his chain coming off he would have done about 53:20.

Also on Sunday, Chris Greig, Greg Lewis and Anna Holder were at the Ickneild Road Club Compomotive Wheels. Chris produced a PB by 4 seconds with a very good time of 22.15. Greg Lewis did a time of 23.18 and Anna flying the flag for the HWCC ladies in a commendable time of 25.15.

ROAD RACE:

James Norris represented Wycombe on Sunday in the John and Dulcie Walker Memorial Road Race. This was meant to be on the road but the Hertfordshire police wouldn’t permit it so the event was re-located to Hillingdon Circuit making it an hour plus 5 lap race.

From the gun, three riders were off the front and managed to keep the peleton at bay for about 20 minutes. James along with some help from the Gregario’s worked together to catch a break and half an hour into the race James attacked, staying away for a lap until the bunch swallowed him up.

He managed to position himself at the front and stayed there and, with two other riders made yet another break with 10 minutes to go. James turned himself inside out to keep the three of them away from the main bunch, knowing this was his last race of the season and wanting to put in a good performance.

With 6 laps to go they were still away working together in through and off style. 3 laps to go and another rider joined the break and 2 laps to go saw another rider join making them a strong group of five!

In the final lap things were hotting up when one of the riders kicked on the back straight. James chased him down and caught him on the finishing straight. Adrenaline was pumping as the two riders battled against each other for the win. With only metres to the line James put down full gas to a very exciting photo finish!

After the video was assessed James was placed 2nd by only a rim depth in what was his best race and best result of the season.

SPORTIVE:

Richard Wise and Ken Powell completed the Ronde Picardie Senior sportive in France. This was a 137km route which on the day was very windy making it tougher than they would have liked. They both achieved silver medals, Keith Powell in 4.35 and Richard Wise in 4.59. Kev Holloway did the Master 180km event but I don’t have any results for him.

TIME TRIALS:

Thursday night both Stewart King and Bob Lambert headed over to the Maidenhead and District CC 10TT at Fifield. On not a particularly fast course and with a headwind they both did respectable times. Stewart placed 11th in 25.18 and Bob placed 17th in 26.16. The event was won overall in 22.48 by AW Cycles Neil Cooper.

A record breaking spree was the order of the weekend for one group of Club members. On Saturday Chrissy Radon won the North Hants Ladies 25 mile time trial in an almost unbelievable time of 54 minutes and 6 seconds. This time makes her the 8th fastest woman of all time over 25 miles in the UK, an absolutely stunning achievement that marks Chrissy as a very special athlete. This ride on the H25/8 course at Farnham was another Club record for Chrissy blitzing her previous mark of 56.23 by a substantial margin.

On Saturday in the Team Sanjan 10TT Greg Lewis recorded 23.30 and Dave Johnson in 21.29.

On Sunday morning in South Wales in the Hirwain 25 mile time trial, a team of our lads went on a recording breaking and personal best frenzy. Adam Topham led the group home with a stunning time of 50.57, a PB by 1.28 placing him 5th. This is also a double club record as it broke the men’s senior record held by Neil Coventry since 1993 and set new veterans actual record previously held by Dave Johnson.

Close on his heels was Dave Johnson with a 53.01, Chris Starling 54.54 (PB), Nick Calkin 56.50 (PB), Richard Davies 57.08 (PB), Cliff Grant 57.57 (PB).

The aggregate team for Adam, Dave and Chris was a new senior men’s team record of 2.38.52. The aggregate team time for Adam, Dave and Nick was a new veteran’s actual team record of 2.40.48. Staggeringly Adam’s time put his name against four new club records.

The event was won overall by Hutch in 46.01 which was 4 seconds outside of his competition record and was an amazing 4 minutes ahead of Jeff Jones who placed second.

Also on Sunday, Chris Greig braved the heat and strong winds to ride the 12 hour. He clocked up 228 miles.
