First off all HWCC members send there best wishes to the family and friends of Laurent Fignon

Laurent passed away today after losing his fight against cancer The Frenchman twice won the Tour de France during his career. He was only 50 years old.

Fignon disclosed in June 2009 that he was undergoing treatment for cancer. It is said to have started in his intestine and then spread further through his body. He continued to commentate for French television on the Tour de France this summer despite a tumour affecting his vocal chords and anyone in france listening to the tour would have heard his husky voice.“I don’t want to die at 50,” he said, earlier this summer. “All I know is that my cancer isn’t evolving. I’m still fighting.”

TIme Trials

Club Champion Adam Topham Won the Westerley CC 25 on the ski slope this weekend with a time of 51:57 the course was very windy day. Adam has added an extra 8 watts versus 4 weeks ago, almost certainly thanks to 5 pyramid interval sessions conducted as very specifically prescribed by HWCC Club Coach Gordon Wright, including punishing sessions on Mon and Wed this week. Adam is over the moon with the result as he had no taper for the race because he wanted to overload in preparation for the BTTC Masters next weekend.

Adam came second to Chris Ball who did an incredible 18:51

Adams time is record breaking for HWCC . Adams time updates Steve Gollas 19.30 by a substantial margin. Its not often a HWCC senior record goes over one of the standard distances and this one is by far the fastest ever time trial done in the Clubs name at an impressive 31.06mph.?

Road Racing

?Python Summer Road Race 15th August

James Norris took part in this Elite race over nine laps on a flat course around Holyport and near to Windsor. Totaling over 85 miles. The neutralised section was policed by the motorbike marshals and kept to a sensible speed allowing all the riders to warm up over several miles. Once on course the attacks came thick and fast, without any definitive breaks happening the first two laps were rapid. Soon there were lots of tired legs and gaps opened up leading to a break of fifteen, after another lap a second break formed containing the major teams. On the fifth lap both breaks joined and the peloton assumed that’s all the major placing’s were now gone. Possibly because there were now too many in the break but they sat up and the whole race came together – The race was back on! With only two laps to go, it was going to come down to a bunch sprint. James’s races normally take part over sixty miles and the last twenty was pushing new limits on his legs. He held a good position in the melee but up against stronger adversary’s could only manage finishing around 20th to 30th place. No results were given above 20th. This has now set the benchmark for next seasons races…Podium

Goodwood Circuit Races 22nd August

3rds: Gareth Batson was out flying the flag for HWCC at the weekend jumping into a field of eighty seven riders on a wet sunday on the motor circuit. Not feeling on top form Gareth used the first five laps to see how the legs felt. Once warmed up he started opening things up on the front, testing his oppositions legs. Creating chances and watching for attacks he marked several of the strong riders, this led to him riding away from the bunch for two miles waiting for others to come across. During the middle part of the race the rain started to come down; the first shower was fine and the warmth of the tarmac kept it dry. Then the rain became heavier and the track now became as slippy as a banana skin covered in oil!

On his final lap Batson prepared him self for his last major attack, moving up the bunch he heard the familiar sound of carbon on tarmac. Slamming on the anchors he was able to avoid the carnage of at least fifteen bikes and riders scattered on the deck, but now distanced from the front of the bunch the placings were gone and he finished feeling strong but thirty seconds down.

E.1.2s: James Norris also pulled on the race jersey. The first few laps were make or break and learning this new style of racing was going to take some practice combined with strong legs. A break formed on the first lap and gained 45 seconds, unfortunately not containing either a Wilier or Felt rider both teams set about pulling it back. Norris found a strong wheel and set about hanging on whilst both teams shared the work on the front taking massive turns and shelling riders out the back in the process. Once the break was within reach the teams jumped across and the race was split in two. That just left twenty riders to fight out the minor places. The rain started to make things interesting and rear wheels twitching out of corners.

With two laps remaining the rider in front of James thought it would be a good idea to lean his bike into a corner… he crashed. Laying out like sleeping policman in front, James’s wheel connected into his ribs at 40k shooting him over the bars and sliding down the road. With the adrenalin running he found his bike, checked himself and proceeded to finish the last two laps for pride.

TIME TRIALS

Club TT Champion Adam Topham took part in the Poole Wheelers 25 on a sporting single carriageway windy course.Adam did a 54:26 and beat second place Paul Jones of Bournemouth Jubilee, who is used to winning any local open event he enters, by 1:46. Jones beat Topham by 2 mins in a 30 mile race at the start of the season. The course was about 30 seconds slower than last year due to wind (Dave Pickering was last year’s winner in 56:35 because Paul Jones punctured and today he was 3rd with a 57:02) Adam was 2:30 quicker than last year so gained about 3 minutes, Adam feels that over 80% of his improvement is aerodynamic gains. Gain with no pain!! Marvelous!!!

Cliff Grant rode the Derby Mercury RC 25 on the A25/11 on Saturday and recorded a 57.24 this is Cliffs best time since he started racing again and only 7 seconds off his all time best .

ROAD RACING

James Norris & Gareth Batson raced at Hillingdon on Tuesday.

Tuesday night at Hillingdon saw Gareth & James take part in the E123 race for HWCC. A slow start for a crit so Gareth got on the front to drag the pace along. A break went which Gareth was a part of but it was soon brought back by Tony Gibb. He then attacked to make a second break which James was part of. James then hung on in that break until Gibb attacked again dropping the rest of the break who went back to the bunch. The attacks then came thick & fast with both Gareth & James being involved in most of them one after the other.

As the race settled down a group of 3 tried to get across to Gibb but just succeeded in hanging between the peloton & the race leader.

Then with 2 laps to go Gareth took a flyer off the front & got a decent gap which he held for a lap & a half. Then with a couple of hundred metres to go the front of the bunch caught him for a sprint finish with James finishing 11th & Gareth 20th. No points scored but a good evenings racing from both.

SPORTIVES
Adrian windsor completed this years tough Etape de Tour. Adrian was going great until about 5k into the Tourmalet and then started to blow. Adrians legs were fine but he must have been suffering from dehydration or salt loss – no power. Adrian lost a lot of time (over 30 minutes) on his previous pace. (What might have been…) .10,000 started the event . The web results show 6,888 finished and Adrian came in at 2,798 on scratch, 2,751 on handicap. But what really matters is that it was absolutely the most awesome experience ever! The scenery, the crowds, the support on the climbs and in the villages, the open roads and the camaraderie. Unforgettable total cycling – there are no adequate words!

More details on this ride and other HWCC Etape riders experiences to come in your Next SPROCKET Magazine – due early SEPT.

Andrew Mullis, John Francis, Ian Sands and Jonathan Chadwick rode the Reading Club’s Anthony Maynard sportive on Sunday.

On a windy, drizzly day John finished the 195K route in a silver standard time of 7:19:16, Ian also took silver in a time of 7:26:14.

Time Trials

Club Champion Adam Topham rode the National 100 on Sunday 11th July Adams story as per below

Riding a national 100 is something right now I would not recommend to my worst enemy. I have to thank Gordon and Margaret for giving up most of their weekend to come along and provide me with what turned out to be critical support. More on that in a moment. I had high hopes of an overall second place but when my subconcious turned my bike left at a diversion sign pointing left, right next to a tiny event sign pointing straight on, at about 54 miles and a few miles before the actual turn that opportunity disappeared. However, I only lost a couple of very confused minutes (the exit was virtually identical to the real turn), which cost me 4th place. I came in 6th and was third in 40 to 44 age group (and would have been 3rd anyway – Julian Jenkinson and Andy Bason came 2nd and 3rd). But I would only have been about 30 seconds off Andy Bason and a minute or so behind Julian Jenkinson, which is very heartening.

After the finish I coasted down to a petrol station to meet Gordon and Margaret and explain the rather bizarre third time check. I was covered from head to toe in salt despite taking on lots of fluid but clearly not enough. 5 minutes later I was writhing in the anguish of profound cramp in both calfs and both thighs, the worst pain I have ever experienced. If Gordon and Margaret had not been there to rescue me and massage my legs back to life whilst ignoring my horror movie-style screams, I would have been hospitalised. Note to self – never go to a 100 unsupported. Further note to self – never go to a 100.

In the end I did a 3:42:24, which would have been around a 3:40:00, which I am very pleased about despite the minor disappointments of the day, and especially considering the heat that meant my average HR for the duration was 171 and 90%+ of max, plus the 15mph winds that meant 30 mph up hill in one direction and an agonising 22/23 mph downhill in the other. Its a PB as well, albeit that doesn’t mean much as it is only my 2nd ever 100, so I’ve never done a 100 without a PB. If I can keep that up I will be well chuffed! The conditions didn’t stop Hutch from recording an unbelievable 3:23:04 and winning the event by a cruel 16 minutes. Different league? Yes. Different planet? Probably.

Anyway, Gordon and Margaret then proceeded to nurse me back to some sort of coherency over the next couple of hours as I hobbled around like I was trying to pick up the gold for 95 to 99 age category (the guy that won 80-84 was in a far healthier state than me), enabling me to face up to my 3:30:00 drive home, which was a little bit easier than my other long journey that day. So, to Gordon and Margaret, a HUGE THANK YOU!!! You probably saved the rest of my season!

Smithfield Nocturne. 19th June. 2/3/4th cat Criterium

James Norris took part in the ‘Cycling Weekly’ support race. The race is held in central London around the Smithfield market in the evening. It short circuit raced over forty minuets plus five laps. This is the third time I have riden this event and knowing how fast it is was well prepared for the speed. The main London teams target this event from Dulwich paragon, London Phoenix and London Dynamo. It is always over subscribed so the organisers take their pick from the most successful or highest point scorers. Going from the gun it was flat out and riders not able to corner fast enough or hold their lines in the corners meant there were three crashes in the first four laps; the sound of carbon and bodies hitting tarmac, sliding into barriers keeps you pushing on. There is no time to look back, drink or shout at other riders. Just keep driving up to the next upright wheel. After ten laps six riders slid off the front of the main pack. Slowly they increased their lead to a minute, held the gap and was sharing the work load. James held his position in the first following group moving through to the front and pushing on the pace. Even with several guys working in this group it was not enough to close the gap on the leaders. There comes a point in a race when the chasers realise their work is not going to close the gap and with ten minutes remaining this happened. Then alliances that were formed are now broken and we start to attack each other. Having worked hard I new my sprint wouldn’t be as strong, giving it one last push on the final lap I finished in 19th place. A good experience which I will better in next years race.

Oakley Village RR. 10th June 2/3/4th cat 85k

Tom Crouch and James Norris raced in plus thirty degree heat on Saturday. Held on a flat course on quiet roads this is an excellent course for a RR. Tom would have preferred a hilly course and started early with his attacking style stringing out the race into one line. James had a mechanical four miles in, the service car was already changing another riders wheel, which meant a long wait. I watched the peloton disappear knowing that unless I could get paced back my race was over. After a rear wheel change and rolling back to the start I asked the commissarie to rejoin the race. He stated I could do this but not contest any points or placing’s. Tom continued to attack but unfortunately missed the deciding break of nine riders including Richard Wood(Team M.K), Paul Crook(Beyond M.B) and Tim Carter(Virgin Active). Rejoining the race on the second lap, the gap had opened up and despite James’ efforts working on the front with Mark Thompson (Dulwich) to close the gap they stayed away for the duration of the race. Another race in the bag. Tom and James finished in the bunch three minutes behind the breakaway. It was won by Paul Crook from a sprint of four. Paul, a previous Elite rider finding excellent form again just at the right time.
